Betty Raynal

PhD Candidate

Betty Raynal received an MChem equivalent from Engineering School CPE Lyon (France) in 2024. She started her PhD in the Andrews Group on a SCOPE scholarship in 2024, after a year in Munich (Germany) and a year in Durham as an exchange student. Her research interests were eclectic until she discovered the beauty of organic cages. She has far too many hobbies for an aspiring academic, including writing, running and philosophy.

Connor Mason

PhD Candidate

Connor Mason received an MChem from Newcastle University in 2024. He started his PhD in the Andrews Group in 2024 studying molecular cages for biomass transformations, and low-symmetry cages.

He loves a good curry.

Siyuan Ma (Stephen)

Visiting Student

Siyuan is completing his BSc degree at Hong Kong PolyU, and is completing a research exchange designing novel triptycenes using the Curtius rearrangment.

Matthew Shovlin

PhD Candidate

Matt completed his MChem at Newcastle University in 2024. He joined the Andrews group for a PhD on an EPSRC DLA scholarship in 2025. His research interests include organic cages, photochemistry and unusually accessed reactivity. In his spare time, he likes pool/snooker, cooking and watching movies, with favourites ranging from Studio Ghibli to Danish crime thrillers.
